In the recent years, the population of the Chinese
immigrants in Atlanta has grown rapidly. However, poor English skills and
the loss of touch with the Chinese language and culture are two serious
issues looming large to affect the immediate and future life of the
Chinese immigrants and their children. We are particularly concerned about
the following facts: 1) many American-born Chinese children are in danger
of losing not only their native language skills but their cultural
identities as well; 2) many Chinese-born new immigrant children have
tremendous learning difficulties in American public schools without
effective bilingual instructional services; and 3) a great number of
adopted Chinese children and children from inter-cultural marriages are in
dire need of mother tongue exposure and culture orientation in order to
maintain their Chinese identities. Existent for these needs, Dr. Lang’s
Chinese Bilingual School aims and strives to provide effective and
high-quality Chinese bilingual education and a variety of Chinese cultural
and art classes to make a change in the life of these Chinese children and
their families.
Dr. Nancy Lang,
founder and president of this school, has a BA degree in English language
and literature from Shandong Teachers’ University in China, a master’s
degree in secondary English education from Carson-Newman College and a
doctoral degree in Foreign Language Education specialized in Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from The University of
Tennessee, Knoxville. Previously, she was Chinese language instructor of
the Modern Languages Department of The University of TN, Knoxville, later
headed the Chinese and English School with the Asian American Community
Service Center in Atlanta, GA.

近年来亚特兰大的华裔人口迅速增长。语言能力差、与母语文化隔离是新移民及其孩子所面临的两大难题。在美出生的中国孩子及许多中美、中亚混血儿童不仅完全失去了母语，而且失去了对母语文化的认同感；新来美的中国孩子所面临的则不仅是英语语言困难，致使长时间在各科学业上得不到长进，而且由于中断了以前的汉语学习课程，汉语听说读写水平也处于停滞不前并渐渐被遗忘的状况。鉴于以上种种需要，双语学校专门为孩子们开设了各种学前、课后、周末汉语、英语、数学补习课程，及传承中国传统文化的多种才艺课活动及实用技巧课程。
双语学校由郎艳霞博士主持。郎博士为职业高校语言教育工作者，有多年丰富的教学经验，毕业于美国田纳西大学教育学院，持有英美语言文学学士、英文教育硕士及外语/英语为第二语言教育博士学位。曾先后任田纳西大学联邦政府军人教育服务部英文老师、田大文科学院现代语系中文讲师、亚特兰大亚裔社区服务中心中英文学校校长及中英实用语言培训及服务中心主任。 |
